Pai Gow Poker Game Rules

Pai gow poker is a casino game. It spawns from the popular dominoes game 'Pai Gow'. It is important not to get the two confused as they are  different games. A standard 53 deck of cards is used that also contains one joker. Your only opponent is the dealer who you must defeat at all costs to take down the pot.

Pai gow poker starts with making a bet. You are then dealt 7 cards. Now you divide your cards into a 5 card hand and a 2 card hand. The 5 card hand is judged in normal poker terms. The only difference is that the nut low straight (Ace-2-3-4-5)  is the second best straight combination behind A-K-Q-J-10. For the two card hand all pairs beat non pairs and then higher pairs will beat lower pairs.

The dealer in Pai gow poker has to compose his cards according to pre determined rules already laid out by the casino. Once finished it is time to determine the winner.

In Pai gow poker you must win both rounds to defeat the dealer.
If your 5 card hand is of higher value then the dealers you win the first round and next your 2 card hands are compared. If your 2 card hand also defeats the dealers you win the game and the payout is even moneys on your bet. When you win one round each the outcome is a draw and your bet will be returned. In the unlikely event that you are both dealt the same hand then sadly the dealer scoops the pot.

A crucial rule to remember in Pai gow poker is that the 5 card hand has to contain the higher hand. For example if your 5 card hand is weak and doesn't even manage a pair but you have a pair in your 2 card hand you will be disqualified so dont forget.

The joker in Pai gow poker can be used to make flushes or straights. If neither are possible the joker is valued as an ace.

Strategy pai gow poker

In Pai gow poker it is important how you arrange your cards. This can be the difference between winning and losing. A high card will often take down the two card hand portion. If dealt an ace and a pair I would put the pair in the 5 card hand and the ace in the 2 card hand. If dealt a potential full house I would split it between the 5 and 2 card hands.  This would give me maximum chances of defeating the dealer on both hands.
